VIVE LA COLLABORATION!

Stereo is the initiative of a small group of illustrators, designers and artists from Rotterdam*. After working for a while as illustrators and designers, they wanted to change the process of magazine making because they found the common practice rather dull. They tried to create a practice that involved more creative freedom and more engagement.

The central idea of Stereo was to form duo's or small groups, and invite them to work directly together on a page or spread. The name 'Stereo' refers to this collaborative way of working. Stereo also related their publication to other ways of making work 'public', like development of internet-tools and organizing various exhibitions. Or -in proper lingo- Stereo created a cross-media platform for an international multidisciplinairy creative network.

The publication was a non-profit initiative. they published 5 issues between 2004 and 2007. The size and design changed each issue. The editions are hand-numbered and range from 500 to a 1000 copies. From the third issue on they started inviting graphic designers to design the overall lay-out with us. This guaranteed fresh and unique approach for each Stereo.
1 to 50 are released as 'Special Edition' Boxes which feature extra's, like goodies, multiples or alternate forms of graphic reproduction (e.g. silkscreen, letterpress). These editions emphasize our linkage with the tradition of art(ist-)publications.
